In 19th-century China, when foot binding was common place, seven year old girls Snow Flower and Lily are matched as laotong - or "old sames" - bound together for eternity. Isolated by their families, they communicate by taking turns writing in a secret language, nu shu, between the folds of a white silk fan. In a parallel story in present day Shanghai, the laotong's descendants, Nina and Sophia, struggle to maintain the intimacy of their own childhood friendship in the face of demanding careers & complicated love lives. Drawing on the lessons of the past, the two modern women must understand the story of their ancestral connection, hidden from them in the folds of the antique white silk fan, or risk losing one another forever.
It is interesting watching the same story unfold as it switches between ancient and modern times. Bingbing Li plays Nina & surprisingly Hugh Jackman makes an appearance.

Bennett's Lane is Melbourne's dedicated Jazz venue. Some may say it takes itself a little too seriously but once you go there and let the music do the talking, you understand why it comes across that way, there are no airs and graces, it's just all about the music.
A great night out, reasonably priced, you're guaranteed to find a spot to perch yourself and there's no queuing at the bar. It may not be filled with the youngest crowd around but what's age when you're listening to really good music!
An upcoming gig worth checking out: August 21st @ 8.30pm, The Harry James Angus Band
Where: 25 Bennet's Lane, Melbourne
